At ReefTO, we are excited and optimistic about how the Taskforce (and the future Sea Country Alliance) is working to bring two cultures and knowledge systems together through genuine partnerships.

Join us and play a part in driving systems-level change to support Traditional Owners in realising their aspirations for co-governance, co-decision-making and new self-determined approaches to managing the Reef.

ReefTO has a number of vacancies opening soon. 

All positions will be flexible in location (Queensland strongly preferred, and required in some cases), full-time and on 3-year fixed term contracts. 

All positions are identified, with a preference for Reef Traditional Owners, but open to other Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

Director, Comms & Creative

This full-time position will lead and manage our communications strategy, ensuring that our message resonates with diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in strategic communications, excellent storytelling skills, and a deep understanding of the issues facing the Great Barrier Reef and its Traditional Owners. Responsibilities include developing and implementing communications plans, managing media relations, and creating compelling content to support our initiatives. The Communications Manager will lead a team of digital and other content creators and will, on occasion, engage and manage external contractors to support with design or other input.

Monitoring, Evaluation & Impact Specialist

This full-time position will lead and manage our monitoring and evaluation efforts, ensuring that our programs and initiatives are effectively measured and impactful. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in monitoring and evaluation, excellent analytical skills, and a deep understanding of the issues facing the Great Barrier Reef and its Traditional Owners. Responsibilities include developing and implementing monitoring and evaluation frameworks, analysing data to assess program effectiveness, and reporting on the impact of our initiatives. This position will also create a “report card” style framework to integrate the monitoring and reporting on how external agencies are tracking with delivery of actions under the Reef 2050 Traditional Owner Implementation Plan. The Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Specialist will work closely with program teams to ensure data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.

Youth Programs Coordinator

This position will lead and manage our youth engagement efforts, ensuring that young Reef Traditional Owners are actively involved in strategic policy and capacity building activities linked to the protection and management of the Great Barrier Reef. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in youth programs, excellent organisational skills, and a deep understanding of the issues facing Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef. Responsibilities include setting up a youth sub-committee of the ReefTO Taskforce, developing and implementing youth programs, and fostering leadership and capacity-building opportunities for young Reef Traditional Owners. This position is negotiable to be part- or full-time.

Operations Manager

We have an exciting opportunity for an Operations Manager to oversee a team of Regional Coordinators at ReefTO. In this role, you will coordinate efforts to foster genuine, lasting relationships with Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef, ensuring their voices are integral to decision-making processes. Reporting to the Director, Programs & Engagement, you will support the delivery of ReefTO’s Engagement Plan, incorporating cultural approaches to engagement. Besides engaging with some regional communities yourself (see the profile for ‘Regional Coordinators’), your additional responsibilities will include operational planning, resource allocation, and providing logistical support to Regional Coordinators as they engage with communities. You will also play a key role in ensuring the messages shared by Regional Coordinators are consistent and accurate, and you will lead on compiling, collating, analysing and interpreting the insights learned. With strong cultural competency and existing relationships in the Reef catchment, you will work alongside a talented team of staff and an inspirational group of Taskforce members, contributing to a transformative vision for the Reef.

Regional Coordinators (x 3)

We have an exciting opportunity for up to three (3) specialists in cultural engagement and community consultation to join ReefTO as Regional Coordinators. You will help foster genuine, lasting relationships with Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef, ensuring their voices are heard and incorporated into decision-making processes. Reporting to the Director, Programs & Engagement, these roles will support delivery of ReefTO’s Engagement Plan using genuine co-design principles. Responsibilities will include: organising and leading regional dialogue sessions, building strong relationships with Traditional Owner groups, presenting complex information clearly and simply, and synthesising learnings to feed back into ReefTO plans and strategies. With strong cultural competency and existing relationships in the Reef catchment, you will work alongside a talented team of staff and an inspirational group of Taskforce members, contributing to a transformative vision for the Reef.

Executive Assistant

This full-time position will provide high-level administrative support to the ReefTO Taskforce and Coordination Unit, ensuring smooth and efficient operations. The ideal candidate will have excellent organisational and communication skills, a keen attention to detail, and a proactive approach to getting things done. Responsibilities include managing schedules, coordinating meetings, taking minutes, booking travel, following up on invoices, preparing reports and documentation, and serving as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders. The Executive Assistant / Secretariat will play a crucial role in supporting the leadership team and facilitating an effective operating environment across the organisation. There are tonnes of opportunities to grow in this job; it would suit a highly resourceful individual who is eager to learn and take initiative.

Events Manager

This full-time position until December 2026 will lead ReefTO’s work in planning and executing culturally inclusive events that amplify the voices of Reef Traditional Owners. Your responsibilities will include event coordination, programming, sponsorship acquisition and management, creative experience curation, budget management, communication, community engagement, and social event coordination. Your primary focus will be delivering an incredible Sea Country Summit for Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef in September 2026, but there will be smaller events along the way to practice on!

Taskforce Members (x 2)

We have an exciting opportunity for the final two Taskforce Members to join ReefTO to play a pivotal role in leading transformational systems change for Reef Traditional Owners. As a Taskforce Member, you will provide effective leadership and oversight of the Taskforce’s activities in line with its three key objectives. You will also foster relationships with key partners and communities. Operational functions are implemented by the Coordination Unit. Taskforce Members are engaged as independent contractors. Taskforce Members engage in weekly catch-ups, monthly online meetings and quarterly in-person workshops. There are also some requirements for additional input, such as reviewing documents, representing the Taskforce at events, and more.
