Meet Mal: A leader anchored in Country, family and responsibility
Grounded by the places and people that made him, Mal finds his balance on the water – his “detox centre.” You’ll find him working on his parents’ property, spending time on cultural camps with his wife and grandson, or coaching rugby league alongside his son.
A leader anchored in Country, family, and responsibility.
With deep cultural roots and over 20 years in Traditional Owner Reef management, Mal Mann helps guide the ReefTO yarns with communities across the Great Barrier Reef – shaping what a ReefTO Alliance could look like, based on mob’s direction.
On the shift he’s seeing
Mal came into the ReefTO engagement space as a Sea Country Forum delegate, and he’s been part of every step since. Looking back over the last twelve months, what stands out to him is how much has changed.
“What really stands out for me is how much stronger and clearer the collective voice is becoming. Mob are shaping the direction now, not just responding to it. Our engagement has real depth — people aren’t just showing up, they’re leaning in with purpose.”
“We’ve still got work ahead, but compared to 12 months ago, we’re on course for the transformational change our mob have pushed for over many years. The momentum feels real, and we’re moving in the right direction by staying guided by mob every step of the way.”
On why the Dialogues matter
For Mal, the Regional Dialogues aren’t just meetings – they’re where decision-making power sits.
“It’s stronger when we’re together. It’s important that our decision makers come to these Regional Dialogues, because the time has come for change around looking after our Sea Country.”
Our future is shaped collectively. Every voice matters on the journey to the ReefTO Summit in September.
Come have a yarn
Mal’s on the road for the Cairns and Innisfail Dialogues next. If you see him there, come say hello – he’s always up for a yarn.
